Ritual at the temple as the light goes
Madmaheshwar is a walk into living history — a thousand-year-old shrine at the end of a Himalayan trail, still lit by evening aarti.
Madmaheshwar — also known as Madhyamaheshwar — is the second of the five Panch Kedar shrines, set deep in the Garhwal Himalayas beneath the Chaukhamba massif. The trail from Ransi winds past waterfalls, river crossings and traditional Garhwali villages before opening onto the temple meadow. Combined with stops at the Devprayag confluence and Dhari Devi temple on the drive in, it is as much a cultural journey as a Himalayan one.
Great for a first Garhwal pilgrimage trek: Round-trip transport from Delhi, a moderate 16 km trail, and two cultural stops on the drive in. No prior high-altitude experience needed.

Questions Every First-Timer Asks
We've answered these 10,000+ times. Here are the honest answers.
How difficult is the Madmaheshwar trek?
It is a moderate trek of roughly 16 km each way from the road head, with a steady gradient rather than steep climbs. Reasonable fitness and the ability to walk for several hours at a stretch are the main requirements. It is well within reach for most people who prepare a little.
What is the significance of Madmaheshwar?
Madmaheshwar, or Madhyamaheshwar, is the second of the five Panch Kedar shrines dedicated to Shiva. Legend holds that the navel of Shiva appeared here. The temple sits in a high meadow beneath the Chaukhamba peaks and remains an active place of worship.
What is Budha Madmaheshwar and is the hike worth it?
Budha Madmaheshwar is a smaller shrine on a ridge above the main temple, roughly an hour's climb. It is optional and weather-dependent, but on a clear morning it offers one of the finest sunrise views of the Chaukhamba range on the entire route. Most people who attempt it say it was the highlight.
Where does the trip start and end?
The trip departs from Akshardham Metro Station in Delhi late in the evening and returns to Delhi via an overnight journey on the final day. Transport for the full round trip is included.
When is the best time to visit?
May to June and September to October. The temple is closed through the deep winter months, and the shoulder seasons offer the most reliable weather along with the clearest Chaukhamba views.
