The Bhrigu Lake Trek is one of Himachal Pradesh's most rewarding short Himalayan adventures. Starting from the scenic slopes of Gulaba and climbing to 4,300 metres, the trail opens into vast high-altitude meadows before revealing a sacred glacial lake set against the Pir Panjal range. Short enough for a long weekend, high enough to feel genuinely remote — it suits first-time high-altitude trekkers and seasoned walkers alike.
Best short high-altitude trek in Himachal: If you have a long weekend and want real altitude without a week-long commitment, this is the one. Start from Manali, finish at Manali.

Questions Every First-Timer Asks
We've answered these 10,000+ times. Here are the honest answers.
Is Bhrigu Lake suitable for first-time trekkers?
Yes, with a caveat. The trail itself is short and well-defined, but you reach 4,300 m in under two days, which is a genuine altitude gain. Reasonable fitness and a willingness to walk uphill for several hours help a lot. Many first-time high-altitude trekkers complete it comfortably.
How long is the trek in total?
Roughly 20–25 km across the three days, with the longest single stretch being summit day from Rola Kholi to the lake and back.
When is the best time to go?
May to June and September to October. Spring brings green meadows with lingering snow patches, while autumn offers crisp, clear skies and the best visibility across the Pir Panjal range.
Will the lake be frozen when I visit?
It depends on timing. Early in the May–June window the lake is often partly frozen or ringed with snow. By September and October it is usually fully thawed with clear reflections. Both are worth seeing — they are simply different experiences.
Is reaching the lake guaranteed?
No high-altitude objective can be guaranteed. Reaching the lake depends on weather, trail conditions, and group fitness as assessed by your trek leaders on the day. Participant safety determines every decision, and in adverse conditions the attempt may be called off.
